Transcript: President Obama News Conference (6-29-11)

Full Transcript. Excerpt Below:

Q    There is some question about the constitutionality of the War Powers Act.

THE PRESIDENT:  I’m just saying I don’t have to reach it.  That’s a good legal answer.

Q    (Inaudible.)

THE PRESIDENT:  Let me start by saying that this administration, under my direction, has consistently said we cannot discriminate as a country against people on the basis of sexual orientation.  And we have done more in the two and a half years that I’ve been in here than the previous 43 Presidents to uphold that principle, whether it’s ending “don’t ask, don’t tell,” making sure that gay and lesbian partners can visit each other in hospitals, making sure that federal benefits can be provided to same-sex couples.  Across the board — hate crimes  — we have made sure that that is a central principle of this administration, because I think it’s a central principle of America.

Now, what we’ve also done is we’ve said that DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional.  And so we’ve said we cannot defend the federal government poking its nose into what states are doing and putting the thumb on the scale against same-sex couples.

What I’ve seen happen over the last several years, and what happened in New York last week I think was a good thing, because what you saw was the people of New York having a debate, talking through these issues.  It was contentious; it was emotional; but, ultimately, they made a decision to recognize civil marriage.  And I think that’s exactly how things should work.

And so I think it is — I think it is important for us to work through these issues — because each community is going to be different and each state is going to be different — to work through them.  In the meantime, we filed a — we filed briefs before the Supreme Court that say we think that any discrimination against gays, lesbians, transgenders is subject to heightened scrutiny, and we don’t think that DOMA is unconstitutional [sic].  And so I think the combination of what states are doing, what the courts are doing, the actions that we’re taking administratively, all are how the process should work.

Q    Are you at all uncomfortable that there could be different rules in different states, you know, and for somebody to make the argument that’s what we saw during segregation –

THE PRESIDENT:  Chuck, I think what you’re seeing is a profound recognition on the part of the American people that gays and lesbians and transgender persons are our brothers, our sisters, our children, our cousins, our friends, our co-workers, and that they’ve got to be treated like every other American.  And I think that principle will win out.  It’s not going to be perfectly smooth, and it turns out that the President — I’ve discovered since I’ve been in this office — can’t dictate precisely how this process moves.  But I think we’re moving in a direction of greater equality and I think that’s a good thing.

Politfact: Michelle Bachmann has a Problem with the Truth

This is why she's a flake. Bachmann is charlatan who's made a career of saying anything that would promote her political ambitions:

SCHIEFFER: I want to ask you about something else. A lot of your critics say you have been very fast and loose with the truth.

You know, the PolitiFact, which is a website that won a Pulitzer, did an analysis of 23 statements that you made recently. Of these 23, only one they said was completely true. Seven they call "pants on fire" kind of falsehoods. Four were "barely true" and two were "half- true."

Boeing, NLRB: Congressional Republicans interfere with NLRB case that involves Boeing

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-hiltzik-20110626,0,1425491.column

The NLRB is looking into whether Boeing chose to establish a manufacturing plant for its new 787 airliner in South Carolina to punish its unionized workers in Everett, Wash., which would be illegal. But the board is months, if not years, away from making any such determination or taking any concrete action against Boeing. An administrative law judge convened a hearing June 14, but thus far has heard not a single word of testimony.

Republican Party of the Rich Plunged us into Deficits before Obama

http://revisionistreview.blogspot.com/2011/06/republican-party-of-rich-plunged-us.html

The failure of our leaders to offer realistic budget proposals was a major reason I decided to retire after 28 years in Congress, most of them as a professional staff member on the Republican side of both the House and Senate Budget Committees. My party talks a good game, railing about the immorality of passing debt on to our children. But the same Congressional Budget Office that punctured Obama's budget also concluded that the major policies that swung the budget from a projected 10-year surplus of $5.6 trillion in 2001 to the present 10-year deficit of $6.2 trillion were Republican in origin.

Bachmann: Fox apology not accepted

http://rss.cnn.com/~r/rss/cnn_politicalticker/~3/aVXFLikKUeU/

Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota didn't exactly accept an apology from Fox News' Chris Wallace following an interaction she felt was "insulting" on "Fox News Sunday." Wallace asked Bachmann "Are you a flake?" in a Sunday interview and later apologized via web video.

Billionaires give big to new 'super PACS'

http://www.newsvine.com/_news/2011/06/26/6951682-billionaires-give-big-to-new-super-pacs

The outside role a small number of extremely wealthy donors is playing in the run up to the 2012 elections is highlighted by the first early finance reports of the new campaign cycle filed late last week by two so-called "super PACs " — political groups that can raise unlimited amounts from individuals, corporations and labor unions.

Michele Bachmann denies benefiting from government aid

http://feeds.latimes.com/~r/latimes/news/nationworld/nation/~3/D6KrsGA7dWY/la-na-michele-bachmann-20110627,0,3115941.story

As the Minnesota Republican kicks off her run for the presidential nomination, she responds to a Los Angeles Times report about federal money that went to her family's farm and her husband's counseling clinic.

Rep. Michele Bachmann deflected allegations Sunday that she and her immediate family had benefited from government assistance despite her demands to cut the federal budget, saying hundreds of thousands of dollars for her family farm and a counseling clinic went to employees and her in-laws.

Republican Romney to tap ex-pat wealth in London

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney takes his fund-raising machine to London next month, holding a reception aimed at wealthy American expatriates working at banks and hedge funds.

A handful of London fund-raisers were held during the 2008 presidential election cycle, but Romney's event, scheduled for July 6, will be the earliest ever of its kind.

The reception will be held at Dartmouth House, an opulent mansion in the heart of Mayfair that is often used for weddings and conferences.

The suggested contribution to the "Romney for President" campaign is $2,500, according to an invitation seen by Reuters. Under U.S. law, only American citizens and green card holders can contribute.

Home Depot accused of violating Buy American Act

Newsvine - Home Depot accused of violating Buy American Act

The photograph on the Home Depot Web site shows a line of smiling soldiers unloading a truck stacked with power tools and other company wares.

The company says this shows "federal dollars go farther at The Home Depot." San Francisco Attorney Paul Scott says the photo also shows the company providing Chinese-made products in violation of the Buy American Act, and the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating.

A federal judge in April refused Home Depot's bid to toss a whistle blower lawsuit Scott and other attorneys filed against the company. Now the country's largest home improvement retailer is the latest company accused of running afoul of the Buy American Act, a 1933 law aimed at protecting U.S. jobs. The law requires that all materials used in construction of public projects originate in the United States or "designated countries."

The MI6 agent found dead in a holdall at his London flat was working on secret technology to target Russian criminal gangs who launder stolen money through Britain.

The revelation adds weight to claims that Gareth Williams was killed because of his secret work and raises the possibility that the Russian mafia has targeted British spies.

Obama: U.S. can't "cut our way to prosperity"

http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/USVideoTopNews/~3/cEcCp0-qo4M/obama-us-cant-cut-our-way-to-prosperity

Nor can we spend our way to prosperity. Especially when you have nothing to spend. And you tried that with no positive results for the American people.

Poll: People divided on looming debt crisis

We need to be worried:

Americans seem not to have awakened to the fast-looming debt crisis that could summon a new recession, imperil their stock market investments and shatter faith in the world's most powerful economy. Those are among the implications, both sudden and long-lasting, expected to unfold if the U.S. defaults on debt payments for the first time in history.

Facing an August deadline for raising the country's borrowing limit or setting loose the consequences, politicians and economists are plenty alarmed. The people? Apparently not so much.

They're divided on whether the raised the limit, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that found 41 percent opposed to the idea and 38 percent in favor.

People aren't exactly blase. A narrow majority in the poll expects an economic crisis to ensue if the U.S., maxed out on its borrowing capacity, starts missing interest payments to creditors. But even among that group, 37 percent say no dice to raising the limit.

http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/mostemailed/*http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110619/ap_on_el_ge/us_republicans_obama_parody

A Barack Obama impersonator was ushered off the stage after he mocked the Republican presidential hopefuls and joked about the real president's biracial roots to a room full of conservative activists Saturday.

The Republican Leadership Conference turned the podium over to impersonator Reggie Brown, who drew raucous applause from the GOP's supporters when he projected lewd photos of Rep. Anthony Weiner, the New York Democrat who just resigned after the furor over his sexually charged online dalliances with a former porn actress and other women.

Brown later played up the mass exodus of advisers to candidate Newt Gingrich's campaign and said Gingrich's supporters "are dropping faster than Anthony Weiner's pants."

The audience grew more uncomfortable when Brown turned to the candidates who are looking to make Obama a one-term president.

The impersonator took a shot at former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, saying Pawlenty missed the conference because "he's having his foot surgically removed from his mouth."

> University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole, author of the influential Middle Eastern politics blog Informed Comment, is calling for an investigation of reports that the Bush White House directed the Central Intelligence Agency to dig up information that could be used to discredit him.
> Former CIA counter terrorism official Glenn Carle told the New York Times that on at least two occasions members of the Bush administration asked intelligence officials to gather sensitive information on Cole, whose blog was seen as critical of the U.S. war effort.

Thousands of union workers march across Brooklyn Bridge to protest proposed NYC budget cuts

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/06/15/2011-06-15_thousands_of_union_workers_march_across_brooklyn_bridge_to_protest_proposed_nyc_.html

Thousands of union workers marched over the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday to rally against the city's proposed budget cuts.

"We're sick and tired of the assault on working men and women," said Denis Hughes, president of the 2.5-million-member New York State AFL-CIO.

Organizers said the "March for the Middle Class" drew between 15,000 and 20,000 people, from plumbers and electricians to tile layers and teachers.

"The middle class is who built this city and built this nation," said Gary LaBarbera, president of the New York City Building and Construction Trades Council. "We're going to stand up for the middle class and the American dream."

Transcript: New Hampshire Republican Presidential Debate (6-13-11)

Read the Full Transcript here. Excerpt below:

Governor Pawlenty, answer the critics -- and as you do so -- who say 5 percent every year is just unrealistic. And as you do so, where's the proof -- where's the proof that just cutting taxes will create jobs? If that were true, why during the Bush years, after the big tax cut, where were the jobs?

PAWLENTY: Well, John, my plan involves a whole plan, not just cutting taxes. We're proposing to cut taxes, reduce regulation, speed up this pace of government, and to make sure that we have a pro-growth agenda.

This president is a declinist. He views America as one of equals around the world. We're not the same as Portugal; we're not the same as Argentina. And this idea that we can't have 5 percent growth in America is hogwash. It's a defeatist attitude. If China can have 5 percent growth and Brazil can have 5 percent growth, then the United States of America can have 5 percent growth.

And I don't accept this notion that we're going to be average or anemic. So my proposal has a 5 percent growth target. It cuts taxes, but it also dramatically cuts spending. We need to fix regulation. We need to have a pro-American energy policy. We need to fix health care policy. And if you do those things, as I've proposed, including cut spending, you'll get this economy moving and growing the private economy by shrinking government.

...Governor Romney, I want you to come in on that point. Is 5 percent overly optimistic? And is it fair to compare the United States' economy, a fully developed economy, to the Chinese economy, which is still in many ways developing?

ROMNEY: Look, Tim has the right instincts, which is he recognizes that what this president has done has slowed the economy. He didn't create the recession, but he made it worse and longer. And now we have more chronic long-term employment than this country has ever seen before, 20 million people out of work, stopped looking for work, or in part-time jobs that need full-time jobs. We've got housing prices continuing to decline, and we have foreclosures at record levels.

This president has failed. And he's failed at a time when the American people counted on him to create jobs and get the economy growing. And instead of doing that, he delegated the stimulus to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and then he did what he wanted to do: card-check, cap-and-trade, Obamacare, reregulation.

I spent my life in the private sector, 25 years.

American household wealth nearly $8 trillion less than before crash

Why has Wall Street recovered so nicely yet it's still like this for the rest? Even worse, why did Congress and the White House go along with it? The GOP may lead the way with apologies for Wall Street but the Democrats have hardly been wallflowers either. The system needed to be saved but that did not mean forgetting about the losses of the majority while ignoring the responsibilities of the minority who caused the crash. It's hard to believe this is not the direct result of our dysfunctional campaign finance laws where those with the deepest pockets dictate the rules. CNNMoney:

U.S. household wealth fell by about $16.4 trillion of net worth from its peak in spring 2007, about six months before the start of the recession, to when things hit bottom in the first quarter of 2009, according to figures from the Federal Reserve.

While a rebound in the stock market, an improved savings rate and consumer steps to reduce debt resulted in net worth gains since 2009, only a little more than half of that lost wealth - $8.7 trillion -- is back on household balance sheets.

That leaves American household wealth $7.7 trillion less than it was before the recession.

5 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq

The Guardian: Decline and fall of the American Empire

Unemployment...

has not returned to Great Depression levels but at 9.1% of the workforce it is still at levels that will have nerves jangling in the White House. The last president to be re-elected with unemployment above 7.2% was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The US is a country with serious problems. Getting on for one in six depend on government food stamps to ensure they have enough to eat. The budget, which was in surplus little more than a decade ago, now has a deficit of Greek-style proportions. There is policy paralysis in Washington.

America...

in 2011 is Rome in 200AD or Britain on the eve of the first world war: an empire at the zenith of its power but with cracks beginning to show.

The experience of both Rome and Britain suggests that it is hard to stop the rot once it has set in, so here are the a few of the warning signs of trouble ahead: military overstretch, a widening gulf between rich and poor, a hollowed-out economy, citizens using debt to live beyond their means, and once-effective policies no longer working. The high levels of violent crime, epidemic of obesity, addiction to pornography and excessive use of energy may be telling us something: the US is in an advanced state of cultural decadence.

Tax Cuts for the Rich: A History of Failure

From Bigcorporationusa.blogspot.com:

Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower took office in 1953. The top tax rate stayed frozen at 91% his entire presidency and remained so throughout JFK's.

A Republican president taxed the rich 91%. Amazing huh? Things must have been horrible in the 50's, right?...

President Eisenhower:

  • Presided over one of the most prosperous and thriving economies in American history.
  • Balanced the budget and created a moderate surplus (The last Republican President to do so)
  • Kept inflation near zero and unemployment low
  • Created nearly 4 million jobs (Factor in that the population in the 50's was less than half of what it is today)
  • Witnessed steady job growth  in all sectors
  • Expanded Social Security
  • Created the International Highway System & NASA
  • Increased Minimum Wage

President Obama Downplays Horrible Jobs Report And Poor Economy

Yesterday's dismal economic and jobs report...

casts serious doubts that our economic recovery will continue. There were just 54,000 jobs added last month and unemployment rose to 9.1%. The 54,000 number is far below the 150,000 jobs which were expected to be added last month.

President Obama...

avoided any talk of this dismal economic report yesterday as he touted the bailouts of "The Big 3." And the White House downplayed the news by stating that the economy is "headed in the right direction" - despite the fact that prices on pretty much everything continue to increase while most Americans' wages are either stagnant or heading backwards. Added to that, banks are refusing to lend to many people with "average" credit.

Productivity...

by corporations has been at an all-time high as they are doing more with less. Anyone with a decent job is willing to do what it takes to keep their job. And, for many salaried workers it means working longer hours for the same pay. And, many hourly workers haven't received raises in years. Or, if you are one of the lucky few who gets a measly 3% raise, that "increase" is eaten up by your annual health insurance increase, which this year is likely to increase 10%.
